Visa & Entry Requirements
Visa requirements vary based on your passport country. For the most accurate information, always check with your country's embassy or the official immigration website.

Self-Employment Residence Permit
Sweden does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. EU/EEA citizens can work freely. Non-EU nationals can stay 90 days visa-free under Schengen rules. For longer stays, a work permit or self-employment residence permit is required.
Official applicationExtension info: Sweden is part of the Schengen Area — most nationalities (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) get 90 days in any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Zone. This cannot be extended without a residence permit.
Medication Restrictions
General prescription medications
Carry medications in original packaging with a prescription or doctor's certificate. Personal supply for up to 3 months allowed for travelers from EEA countries, up to 1 month from non-EEA.
Controlled substances
Strong painkillers, ADHD medication, and sleep aids may require a Schengen certificate (from EEA) or doctor's certificate in English. Sweden has strict drug policies.
Essential Apps
UberAvailable in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö.
BoltOften cheaper than Uber. Good coverage in major Swedish cities.
Notes for Visitors
- Sweden is almost entirely cashless — you genuinely may never need to touch physical money
- Download the SL app for Stockholm transit — contactless cards also work on all buses and metro
- Book the SJ high-speed train between Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö in advance for cheaper fares
- Tap water in Sweden is excellent — no need to buy bottled water
SIM Cards & Internet
Sweden has excellent 4G/5G coverage nationwide. EU roaming applies for EU carriers — check if your plan includes it. Telia has the best overall coverage including remote areas. Tre (3) is a good budget option. eSIM works well.
- Telia has the widest coverage including remote Lapland areas
- Coverage excellent in cities and along all main routes
- Very remote northern wilderness may have limited signal
- Free WiFi widely available in cafes, hotels, and public transport
WiFi Reliability
Excellent in cities and tourist areas. Most cafes, hotels, libraries, and public spaces offer free WiFi. Remote Lapland areas will have limited connectivity.

Money & Banking
Cards vs Cash
Sweden is the world's most cashless society. Almost everywhere accepts Visa and Mastercard — even street vendors, flea markets, and public toilets. Many businesses actively refuse cash. Carrying some SEK is rarely necessary but wise for very remote rural areas.
ATM Tips
ATMs (Bankomat/Uttagsautomat) available in cities and towns. Use bank ATMs from Swedbank, SEB, Handelsbanken, or Nordea. Most travelers won't need cash at all.
Tipping Culture
Not expected. Service is included in all prices. Rounding up to the nearest 10 or leaving 5–10% for exceptional sit-down restaurant service is appreciated but entirely optional.
- Sweden is expensive — budget $20–35 USD for a basic meal, $6+ for a coffee
- Swish is Sweden's universal payment app — locals use it for everything, but it requires a Swedish bank account
- Always pay in SEK at ATMs and terminals — dynamic currency conversion adds 5–8% markup

Getting Around
From the Airport
Fastest option from Stockholm Arlanda to Central Station in 20 minutes. Runs every 10–15 minutes. Clean and comfortable.
Coach service to Stockholm city center. Takes 40–50 minutes depending on traffic.
Cheapest option from Arlanda via SkyCity station. Takes about 40 minutes.
Available at all terminals. Fixed-price taxis are common — agree on price before departure.
Local Transport
Stockholm's metro — 3 lines, 100 stations. Many stations feature world-famous public art installations. Use SL app or contactless card.
Extensive tram network in Gothenburg (Västtrafik). Stockholm has limited tram service.
Comprehensive bus networks in all cities. Same ticketing as metro/tram.
Part of Stockholm's public transport — connects islands in the archipelago. Included in SL transit pass.
Stockholm City Bikes available April–October. Gothenburg has Styr & Ställ bike share.
Driving & Rental Cars
International Driving Permit required
Sweden requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.
Stockholm and Gothenburg charge a congestion fee to enter the city center — cameras read your plate automatically and bill the vehicle owner.

Renting a car in Sweden
- Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
- Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
- Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
- Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
- Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
- Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Scams to Watch Out For
Dynamic Currency Conversion
ATMs and card terminals offer to charge in your home currency instead of SEK. The exchange rate used is 5–8% worse than the interbank rate.
Prevention: Always choose to pay in SEK when given the option. Never accept the terminal's conversion offer.
Overpriced tourist restaurants in Gamla Stan
Restaurants in Stockholm's Old Town (Gamla Stan) charge significantly above average prices with smaller portions targeting tourists.
Prevention: Walk to Södermalm or Norrmalm for better value and quality. Check menus and prices before sitting down.
Fake charity collectors
People approaching with clipboards claiming to collect for charities, often using aggressive tactics or distraction while a partner pickpockets.
Prevention: Politely decline and walk away. Legitimate Swedish charities use clearly branded staff and digital payment methods.

Dietary Options
🌱 Vegan Friendly
Sweden has one of Europe's best vegan scenes. Stockholm and Gothenburg have numerous dedicated vegan restaurants and almost all mainstream restaurants offer plant-based options. Oat milk brand Oatly is Swedish — oat milk is the default in many cafes. Supermarkets have extensive plant-based selections.
🥗 Vegetarian Friendly
Excellent everywhere. Vegetarian options are standard on virtually all restaurant menus. Dedicated vegetarian restaurants are common in cities. Swedish cuisine has many naturally vegetarian dishes.
🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly
Good awareness throughout Sweden. Most restaurants understand gluten intolerance. Supermarkets (ICA, Coop, Hemköp) have clearly labeled gluten-free sections. Say 'glutenfri' — it's the same word.
Traveling with a Pet
Governed by the uniform 2026 EU pet entry health protocols (Regulation 2026/131).
Timeline
21 days minimum
Quarantine Risk

Regulatory Framework

Key Constraints

Pet Culture

Cultural Tips
Lagom — the Swedish concept of 'just right' or 'in moderation' — shapes everything from food portions to social interactions. Don't be excessive or extravagant.
Swedes deeply respect personal space and privacy — don't sit next to someone on public transport if other seats are available.
Fika is a sacred daily ritual — coffee and pastries (usually a kanelbulle/cinnamon bun) with friends or colleagues. It's the social glue of Swedish life.
Punctuality is extremely important — being late without warning is considered very disrespectful.
Swedes are reserved with strangers but genuinely warm once you know them. Silence is comfortable, not awkward.
Remove your shoes when entering someone's home — this is non-negotiable in Swedish culture.
Local Quirks & Fun Facts
Swedes queue with numbered ticket systems (nummerlapp) at delis, pharmacies, and government offices. Taking a number is instinctive — cutting the queue is a grave social offense.
Allemansrätten (the Right of Public Access) means you can hike, camp, and pick berries/mushrooms almost anywhere in nature — even on private land. Respect the land in return.
Sweden has 'fredagsmys' (cozy Friday) — a national tradition of staying in on Friday nights with tacos, chips, and candy. Yes, tacos are Sweden's unofficial Friday food.
Swedish supermarkets sell 'lördagsgodis' (Saturday candy) — the tradition of only eating sweets on Saturdays started as a dental health campaign and stuck.
The Stockholm metro is called 'the world's longest art gallery' — over 90 of its 100 stations are decorated with sculptures, murals, and installations.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Trying to use cash — many Swedish businesses genuinely cannot accept it. Always have a card or mobile payment ready.
Underestimating distances in northern Sweden — Lapland is vast and sparsely populated. Plan driving times carefully.
Skipping Gothenburg — Sweden's second city is friendlier, has better seafood, and a fantastic archipelago right on its doorstep.
Not respecting 'lagom' — being loud, boastful, or excessive is the fastest way to make Swedes uncomfortable.
Visiting only in summer — Sweden's winter, with northern lights, ice hotels, and dog sledding, is equally spectacular.
Not downloading transit apps — Stockholm's SL app and Gothenburg's Västtrafik app are essential for navigation.
