Money & Banking
Cards vs Cash
Latvia is increasingly card-friendly, especially in Riga. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at restaurants, shops, hotels, and supermarkets. Smaller market vendors, rural areas, and some older establishments still prefer cash. Carry some euros for markets and small purchases.
ATM Tips
ATMs (Bankomāts) available throughout Riga and major towns. Use bank ATMs from Swedbank, SEB, or Citadele. Avoid Euronet ATMs which charge excessive fees. Rural areas have limited ATM access.
Tipping Culture
Not mandatory but increasingly common in Riga. Rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good sit-down restaurant service is appreciated. Not expected at cafes or bars.
- Latvia is very affordable compared to Western Europe — a full meal costs $8–15 USD
- Avoid Euronet ATMs — they charge high fees and offer poor exchange rates
- Contactless payment widely available in Riga but less common in rural areas

Driving & Rental Cars
International Driving Permit required
Latvia requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Renting a car in Latvia
- Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
- Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
- Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
- Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
- Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
- Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Safety & Accessibility
For Women Travelers
- Riga is generally safe for solo female travelers
- Standard precautions in Old Town bar areas after midnight
- Public transport is safe during normal hours
- Avoid poorly lit areas in Maskavas Forštate at night
LGBTQ+ Friendliness
Latvia is more conservative on LGBTQ+ issues than Western Europe. Same-sex partnerships are legally recognized since 2023. Public displays of affection may attract attention outside Riga's central areas. Riga Pride takes place annually but has faced some opposition. The younger generation and urban Riga are generally accepting.
- Riga's city center is generally open and accepting
- Be more discreet outside Riga and in rural areas
- EuroPride was held in Riga in 2015 — the community has a visible presence

Wheelchair Accessibility
Riga's Old Town cobblestones are challenging for wheelchair users. Newer buildings and major hotels meet EU accessibility standards. Public transport accessibility is improving but inconsistent. Many older buildings lack elevators.
- Newer trams and buses are wheelchair accessible
- Major museums and attractions have accessibility features
- Riga Airport is fully accessible
- Old Town cobblestones make wheelchair travel difficult
Pickpocket Hotspots
- Riga Old Town — especially near the cathedral and bar district
- Riga Central Market during busy hours
- Central train station area

Scams to Watch Out For
Overpriced Old Town bars
Some bars in Riga's Old Town near the cathedral charge extremely high drink prices that aren't clearly displayed, targeting tourists.
Prevention: Always check the menu and prices before ordering. Avoid bars that aggressively tout outside. Ask locals for recommendations.
Euronet ATMs
Euronet Worldwide ATMs charge high service fees and offer poor dynamic currency conversion rates, costing 8–12% more than bank ATMs.
Prevention: Only use bank ATMs from Swedbank, SEB, or Citadele. Always decline the ATM's offer to convert to your home currency.
Taxi overcharging
Unlicensed taxis or drivers who 'forget' to start the meter, especially from the airport or train station.
Prevention: Always use Bolt or Uber. If taking a street taxi, ensure the meter is running and the company name is clearly displayed on the car.

Dietary Options
🌱 Vegan Friendly
Riga has a growing vegan scene with several dedicated restaurants and cafes. Traditional Latvian cuisine is very meat and dairy-heavy. Outside Riga, vegan options are limited — self-catering from supermarkets (Rimi, Maxima) is a good strategy.
🥗 Vegetarian Friendly
Manageable in Riga with a good selection of vegetarian-friendly restaurants. Traditional Latvian food relies heavily on pork, potatoes, and dairy. Outside Riga, options are more limited but restaurants are generally accommodating if you ask.
🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly
Awareness is growing. Riga restaurants are increasingly aware of gluten-free needs. Supermarkets have gluten-free sections. Traditional Latvian food relies heavily on rye bread, so communicate clearly. Say 'bez glutēna' (without gluten).

Cultural Tips
Latvians are reserved and private — don't expect small talk with strangers. Conversations are direct and sincere once initiated.
Remove your shoes when entering someone's home — this is standard practice throughout the Baltics.
Latvians celebrate Jāņi (Midsummer/Summer Solstice) on June 23–24 — it's the biggest celebration of the year with bonfires, folk songs, cheese, and beer.
The Song and Dance Festival tradition is a UNESCO masterpiece — Latvians are deeply proud of their choral singing heritage.
Punctuality is important — arriving late is considered disrespectful.
When greeting, a firm handshake with eye contact is standard. Kissing cheeks is not common with strangers.
Local Quirks & Fun Facts
Riga's Central Market is housed in five repurposed World War I Zeppelin hangars — it's one of Europe's largest and most atmospheric markets.
Latvia has more than 12,000 rivers and 2,000 lakes — Latvians take immense pride in their natural landscapes and spend weekends at countryside 'lauku mājas' (farmhouses).
Black Balsam (Rīgas Melnais Balzams) is Latvia's legendary herbal liqueur — it's an acquired taste at 45% alcohol, but mixing it with blackcurrant juice is the local trick.
Latvians are passionate mushroom and berry foragers — autumn forests are full of families with baskets hunting for porcini and chanterelles.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing Latvia with Lithuania — Latvians take this very seriously. Riga is Latvia's capital, Vilnius is Lithuania's.
Only visiting Riga — Sigulda (the 'Switzerland of Latvia') and Jūrmala beach are easy day trips and absolutely worth it.
Not trying Latvian food — black bread (rupjmaize), grey peas with bacon, and smoked fish are delicious traditional staples.
Using Euronet ATMs — they charge excessive fees. Look for Swedbank, SEB, or Citadele ATMs.
Underestimating winter — Latvia gets proper cold (-10 to -20°C) and dark from November to February. Dress appropriately.
Skipping the Art Nouveau district — Riga has the highest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture in the world.
