Money & Banking
Cards vs Cash
Estonia is very card-friendly — one of Europe's most digitally advanced countries. Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere including small cafes, market stalls, and taxis. Contactless payment is standard. Cash is rarely needed but useful for very small market purchases in rural areas.
ATM Tips
ATMs available in Tallinn and all major towns. Use bank ATMs from Swedbank, SEB, or LHV. Avoid Euronet ATMs. Rural areas may have limited ATM access.
Tipping Culture
Not expected or required. Service is included in prices. Rounding up or leaving 5–10% for exceptional restaurant service is appreciated but never expected.
- Estonia is affordable — a good meal costs $10–18 USD, cheaper than Finland or Sweden
- Contactless payment works almost everywhere — even market vendors and buses
- Avoid Euronet ATMs — use Swedbank, SEB, or LHV bank ATMs

E-scooters widely available in central Tallinn — easy and cheap via the Bolt app.
Driving & Rental Cars
International Driving Permit required
Estonia requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Renting a car in Estonia
- Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
- Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
- Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
- Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
- Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
- Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Scams to Watch Out For
Old Town tourist traps
Restaurants on Tallinn's Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) charge significantly more than places one street away, with smaller portions and lower quality.
Prevention: Walk one or two streets away from Town Hall Square. Check Google reviews. Try Telliskivi Creative City or Kalamaja for better value.
Euronet ATMs
Euronet ATMs charge high service fees and offer poor dynamic currency conversion rates.
Prevention: Use bank ATMs from Swedbank, SEB, or LHV. Always decline the ATM's offer to convert to your home currency.
Stag party overcharging
Some Old Town bars target tourist groups (especially stag parties) with expensive cocktails and unclear pricing.
Prevention: Check prices before ordering. Avoid bars with aggressive promoters outside. Ask locals for genuine recommendations.

Dietary Options
🌱 Vegan Friendly
Tallinn has a growing vegan scene with several dedicated restaurants. Traditional Estonian cuisine is very meat and potato-heavy. Outside Tallinn, vegan options are limited. Supermarkets (Selver, Rimi, Prisma) stock plant-based alternatives.
🥗 Vegetarian Friendly
Manageable in Tallinn with good restaurant variety. Traditional Estonian food is meat-heavy (pork, sausages, smoked fish). Most restaurants in Tallinn accommodate vegetarians. Tartu also has decent options.
🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly
Awareness is growing. Tallinn restaurants increasingly understand gluten-free requirements. Estonian cuisine relies on rye bread, so communicate clearly. Supermarkets have gluten-free sections. Say 'gluteenivaba' (gluten-free).

Cultural Tips
Estonians are famously reserved and value silence — small talk with strangers is uncommon. Direct, efficient communication is preferred over chattiness.
Remove your shoes when entering someone's home — standard throughout the Baltics.
Estonia is one of the world's least religious countries — churches are primarily architectural and historical attractions.
Sauna culture is deeply important — Estonians take saunas very seriously. If invited, it's a genuine honor. Nudity is normal in same-gender saunas.
Punctuality is important — Estonians value efficiency and being on time.
Personal space is highly valued — Estonians maintain more physical distance in conversation than many cultures.
Local Quirks & Fun Facts
Estonia is the birthplace of Skype, Bolt, Wise (TransferWise), and Pipedrive — it has more tech startups per capita than almost anywhere on earth.
Wife-carrying championships originated in nearby Finland but Estonia hosts major competitions too — it's taken semi-seriously.
Estonians have a concept called 'kiiking' — competitive swinging on giant swings, trying to go over the top bar. It's an actual sport with world championships.
Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe — it genuinely looks like a fairy tale.
Estonia was the first country to offer e-Residency — a digital identity for global citizens to run EU businesses remotely.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing Estonia with the other Baltic states — Estonians are culturally and linguistically closer to Finland than Latvia or Lithuania.
Only visiting Tallinn's Old Town — Telliskivi Creative City, Kalamaja, and Kadriorg are equally fascinating neighborhoods.
Skipping Tartu — Estonia's second city is a vibrant university town with its own distinct character and great food scene.
Not trying Estonian sauna culture — the smoke sauna tradition in Võru County is UNESCO-listed.
Underestimating winter — Estonia gets very cold (-15 to -25°C) and dark from November to February.
Using Euronet ATMs — use Swedbank, SEB, or LHV bank ATMs to avoid excessive fees.
