Driving & Rental Cars

International Driving Permit required

Turkey requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Renting a car in Turkey

  • Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
  • Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
  • Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
  • Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
  • Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
  • Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Safety & Accessibility

For Women Travelers

Exercise Caution
  • Dress modestly in conservative and rural areas — shoulders and knees covered is safest outside resort towns
  • Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar neighborhoods, especially outside major tourist zones
  • Catcalling can occur — wearing headphones and walking with purpose helps deter unwanted attention
  • Use BiTaksi rather than hailing street taxis at night for safer, tracked rides
  • Istanbul, Antalya, and Izmir are generally safe; exercise more caution in eastern Turkey

LGBTQ+ Friendliness

Neutral

Homosexuality is legal but conservative social attitudes are widespread, especially outside Istanbul. Pride marches have been banned in Istanbul since 2015. LGBTQ+ venues exist in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district but operate quietly.

  • Istanbul's Beyoğlu/Taksim area has a discreet LGBTQ+ scene — ask locals for current venues
  • Public displays of affection between same-sex couples may attract negative attention, especially outside Istanbul
  • Attitudes vary significantly between western coastal cities (more liberal) and inland/eastern regions (very conservative)

Wheelchair Accessibility

Moderate

Turkey is rapidly improving accessibility in cities, with newer metro stations and malls being fully accessible. However, historic areas like the Grand Bazaar, Cappadocia's cave hotels, and cobblestoned old towns remain very challenging for wheelchair users.

  • Istanbul's newer metro lines have elevators and tactile paths
  • Many 4-5 star hotels have accessible rooms
  • Historic sites like Hagia Sophia have partial ramp access
  • Cobblestoned streets in old towns are difficult for wheelchairs

Pickpocket Hotspots

  • Istanbul Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar
  • Istiklal Avenue and Taksim Square
  • Public ferries during rush hour
  • Sultanahmet tourist area

Drivers take long routes or have rigged meters.

Prevention: Use BiTaksi app or agree on price beforehand.

Tap Water

Not recommended

Don't drink the tap water.

Use sealed bottled water, or water that has been boiled or treated, for drinking and for brushing your teeth. Skip ice unless you know it was made from safe water. Check that the bottle seal is unbroken, because refilled bottles are sometimes sold.

A travel water filter can help, but filters differ. One that removes bacteria and parasites does not remove viruses, so for that you need a purifier, or you can boil the water. Boiling is the best way to make water safe.

Dietary Options

🌱 Vegan Friendly

Moderate

Turkish cuisine has many naturally vegan meze dishes — hummus, ezme, stuffed grape leaves (yaprak sarma with rice), and seasonal vegetable dishes are widely available. However, many dishes use butter or yogurt, so always specify 'veganım' (I'm vegan). Street food like simit (sesame bread) and roasted chestnuts are safe bets.

🥗 Vegetarian Friendly

Good

Vegetarians thrive in Turkey thanks to the rich meze culture — cheese-filled börek, menemen (scrambled eggs with tomatoes), and dozens of vegetable-based dishes. Breakfast spreads are a vegetarian dream with cheese, olives, honey, and eggs. Say 'etsiz' (without meat) when ordering.

🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly

Good

Rice pilav is a staple and naturally gluten-free. Many grilled meat and fish dishes come with rice or salad. However, bread is central to Turkish dining and cross-contamination is common. Say 'glutensiz' at restaurants — awareness is growing in tourist areas.

Traveling with a Pet

Difficult
5/10

Requires pre-clearance tracking, localized clinical validation, and advanced government import licenses.

Timeline

30-45 days minimum

Quarantine Risk

Medium if permit missing

Regulatory Framework

Advance Government No Objection Certificate (NOC) / Import Permit.

Key Constraints

Banned from commercial flight cabin spaces on specific airlines. Supplementary vaccine sets required.

Pet Culture

Highly structured or fragmented urban terrain. Best within dedicated expat pockets and private developments.

Founder's Picks

Cultural Tips

Bargaining is expected at bazaars — but do it with warmth and humor. Aggressive haggling is off-putting. Start around 40% and enjoy the back-and-forth.

Remove shoes at the door of any home or mosque. Look for a pile of shoes — that's your cue.

When offered çay (tea), accept it. It's not really a question. Refusing tea is like refusing a handshake.

Turkish hospitality is legendary and aggressive — if invited for a meal, expect to be fed far beyond what you can eat. 'I'm full' means nothing.

Cover shoulders and knees at mosques. Women should bring a scarf for their hair — some mosques provide them, others don't.

Dinner is eaten around 8-9 PM. Arriving at 6 PM for dinner will get you a confused look and a locked door.

Local Quirks & Fun Facts

😄

Turkish breakfast (kahvaltı) is a sprawling event — 15+ small plates of cheese, olives, honey, eggs, sucuk, and unlimited bread. Budget two hours.

😄

Istanbul's street cats are basically co-citizens — they have their own water bowls outside shops, dedicated Instagram accounts, and a documentary (Kedi)

😄

Dondurma (Turkish ice cream) vendors will put on a full comedy show — the sticky ice cream lets them tease you with fake handoffs before you finally get your cone

😄

You'll be offered çay at carpet shops, ferry terminals, barbershops, and gas stations. It's the social glue of the entire country.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
