Money & Banking
Cards vs Cash
Albania is still largely cash-based. Cards accepted at hotels, nice restaurants, and shops in Tirana. Cash essential elsewhere, especially in smaller towns and for taxis.
ATM Tips
ATMs available in cities. Use bank ATMs (Raiffeisen, Credins, BKT). Withdrawal limits around 50,000-100,000 ALL. Euros often accepted in tourist areas but poor exchange rate.
Tipping Culture
Not traditionally expected but appreciated. Round up at restaurants or 5-10% for good service. Taxis: round up.

Driving & Rental Cars
International Driving Permit required
Albania requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Renting a car in Albania
- Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
- Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
- Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
- Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
- Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
- Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee
EconomyBookings

Tap Water
Don't drink the tap water.
Use sealed bottled water, or water that has been boiled or treated, for drinking and for brushing your teeth. Skip ice unless you know it was made from safe water. Check that the bottle seal is unbroken, because refilled bottles are sometimes sold.
A travel water filter can help, but filters differ. One that removes bacteria and parasites does not remove viruses, so for that you need a purifier, or you can boil the water. Boiling is the best way to make water safe.

Dietary Options
🌱 Vegan Friendly
Challenging in a meat and dairy-centric culture. Tirana has a few vegan-friendly spots. Fresh vegetables and salads are common. Say 'jam vegan' or explain in detail. Self-catering may be needed.
🥗 Vegetarian Friendly
Better than vegan with cheese, eggs, and vegetable dishes available. 'Jam vegetarian' is understood. Fresh salads and grilled vegetables are common. Watch for meat stock in soups.
🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly
Limited awareness. Rice dishes and grilled meats/vegetables are naturally GF. Bread is a staple so avoiding it may confuse servers. Bring translation cards.
Traveling with a Pet
Requires pre-clearance tracking, localized clinical validation, and advanced government import licenses.
Timeline
30-45 days minimum
Quarantine Risk
Medium if permit missing
Regulatory Framework
Advance Government No Objection Certificate (NOC) / Import Permit.
Key Constraints
Banned from commercial flight cabin spaces on specific airlines. Supplementary vaccine sets required.
Pet Culture
Highly structured or fragmented urban terrain. Best within dedicated expat pockets and private developments.

Cultural Tips
Head gestures are reversed — nodding means 'no' and shaking your head means 'yes.' This will confuse you for days. Watch their words, not their head.
Coffee isn't a beverage, it's an institution. Sitting at a café for two hours over a single macchiato is normal and expected.
Besa (a code of honor around hospitality) is sacred — if an Albanian invites you into their home, you're treated like royalty. Expect food, raki, and more food.
Learn 'faleminderit' (thank you) and 'përshëndetje' (hello) — English is growing fast among younger people but limited in rural areas
Dress modestly at mosques and churches — Albania is one of the most religiously tolerant countries in Europe, but respect at holy sites matters
Tipping 10% at restaurants is appreciated. Round up for coffee. It's never expected but always welcomed.
Local Quirks & Fun Facts
Xhiro (the evening stroll) is a nightly ritual — around 6-8 PM, entire towns pour onto the main boulevard to walk, socialize, and people-watch. Join in.
There are over 170,000 communist-era bunkers scattered across the country — on beaches, in backyards, on mountainsides. Some have been turned into cafés and art installations.
Raki (homemade grape brandy) will be offered at 10 AM, 2 PM, and midnight. Refusing outright is rude — at least take a polite sip.
The bill-paying argument is an Albanian sport. Two Albanians will physically wrestle for the check. Let them win — it's a point of deep personal pride.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Only visiting the beaches - Albanian Alps and historic cities are incredible
Not bringing cash - card acceptance is limited
Expecting fixed bus schedules - intercity transport is flexible
Rushing through - Albania rewards slow travel
Not trying raki - the local spirit is a cultural experience
Confusing head gestures - nod means no, shake means yes
