Essential Apps

OpenTable logoOpenTable

Widely used for restaurant reservations — coverage is strongest in bigger, more international cities.

Notes for Visitors

  • Uber and Bolt work with international cards
  • Ferry tickets between islands can be booked via Jadrolinija app or website
  • ZET (Zagreb public transport) tickets can be bought via mobile app

SIM Cards & Internet

eSIM works well. If you need a local SIM, A1 Croatia and HT (Hrvatski Telekom) have the best coverage. EU roaming applies for EU residents.

HT (Hrvatski Telekom)
Telemach
  • EU residents can use their home SIM with no roaming charges
  • eSIM with Airalo or Saily works well
  • WiFi widely available in cafes and restaurants

WiFi Reliability

Good WiFi in cities and tourist areas. Island and rural coverage can be spotty. Expect 20-50 Mbps in most cafes.

Money & Banking

Cards vs Cash

Croatia adopted the Euro in January 2023. Cards are widely accepted in cities, tourist areas, and restaurants. Cash is still useful for smaller shops, markets, ferries, and rural areas.

ATM Tips

Use ATMs at major banks (Zagrebačka banka, PBZ, Erste). Avoid Euronet ATMs — they charge high fees and poor exchange rates. Withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees.

Tipping Culture

Tipping 10-15% is appreciated at restaurants but not mandatory. Round up for cafes, taxis, and bar staff. Service charge is sometimes included — check the bill.

  • Old Kuna currency is no longer accepted anywhere
  • Some smaller islands and rural areas prefer cash

Getting Around

From the Airport

Airport Shuttle Bus
€8-10

Pleso Prijevoz runs shuttles between Zagreb Airport and the city center every 30-60 minutes.

Uber/Bolt
€15-25 to city center

Available at Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik airports.

Official Airport Taxi
€25-40 depending on destination

Fixed rates from designated taxi stands at arrivals.

Local Transport

Tram (Zagreb)

Extensive tram network covers central Zagreb. Buy tickets from kiosks or the ZET app.

Bus

Main public transport in Split, Dubrovnik, and smaller cities.

Uber/Bolt

Most convenient in larger cities.

Ferry/Catamaran

Jadrolinija and Krilo operate between coastal cities and islands. Book in advance during summer.

Driving & Rental Cars

International Driving Permit required

Croatia requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Strictly enforced — checks are common.

Renting a car in Croatia

  • Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
  • Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
  • Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
  • Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
  • Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
  • Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Safety & Accessibility

For Women Travelers

Very Safe
  • Croatia is one of the safest countries in Europe for solo female travelers
  • Coastal towns and islands feel very secure even at night
  • Use normal city precautions in Zagreb after dark

LGBTQ+ Friendliness

Neutral

Croatia is a predominantly Catholic country and attitudes outside Zagreb can be conservative. Zagreb hosts a Pride parade and has a growing LGBTQ+ scene. PDA between same-sex couples may attract attention in smaller towns.

  • Zagreb is the most LGBTQ+ friendly city
  • Tourist areas along the coast are generally accepting
  • Smaller inland towns can be more conservative

Wheelchair Accessibility

Moderate

Accessibility is improving but historic old towns with cobblestones and steep streets can be challenging. Newer hotels and restaurants are generally accessible.

  • Zagreb trams have low-floor access
  • Many beach resorts have accessible facilities
  • Dubrovnik's Old Town is extremely hilly and cobblestoned
  • Newer accommodations generally meet EU accessibility standards

Pickpocket Hotspots

  • Dubrovnik's Old Town during cruise ship arrivals
  • Split's Riva promenade
  • Zagreb's main square (Ban Jelačić)
  • Crowded ferries and bus stations

Scams to Watch Out For

Overpriced Restaurants

Some Dubrovnik and Split restaurants near major attractions have inflated prices not clearly listed.

Prevention: Always check the menu and prices before sitting down. Walk a few streets away from main tourist spots.

Unlicensed Tour Operators

Unofficial tour operators on the waterfront may offer boat trips at high prices with poor service.

Prevention: Book through established agencies or your hotel. Check reviews online.

Taxi Overcharging

Some taxi drivers take longer routes or don't use meters.

Prevention: Use Uber or Bolt for transparent pricing. If using a taxi, insist on the meter.
