Essential Apps
OpenTableWidely used for restaurant reservations — coverage is strongest in bigger, more international cities.
Notes for Visitors
- No Uber in Jamaica — use hotel-arranged transport or JUTA taxis
- WhatsApp is essential for communicating with tour operators and drivers
- Always negotiate taxi prices before getting in
SIM Cards & Internet
Get a local SIM from Digicel or FLOW for best rates. Digicel has the widest coverage. Data plans are affordable — around $10-20 USD for several GB.
- eSIM works with Airalo
- Digicel has better rural coverage
- Resort WiFi is usually reliable but can be slow during peak times
WiFi Reliability
Hotel and resort WiFi is generally reliable. Speeds vary from 5-30 Mbps. Public WiFi is limited outside tourist areas.

Money & Banking
Cards vs Cash
Cards accepted at hotels, resorts, and larger restaurants. Cash is essential for local shops, markets, street food, and transportation. USD is widely accepted but you'll get better rates paying in JMD.
ATM Tips
Use ATMs at major banks (NCB, Scotiabank Jamaica, JMMB). Avoid standalone ATMs. Max withdrawal typically JMD 20,000-40,000. ATMs in tourist areas are more reliable.
Tipping Culture
Tipping is expected and important. Restaurants: 10-15% (check if service charge is included). Hotel staff: $2-5 USD per day. Tour guides: 15-20%. Taxi drivers: round up.
- USD is widely accepted at tourist businesses but JMD gives better value at local spots
- Exchange rates at hotels are much worse than banks or cambios

Getting Around
From the Airport
Most resorts offer airport transfers — arrange in advance.
Licensed tourist taxis at designated airport stands. Fixed rates by destination.
Comfortable bus service between Montego Bay and major tourist areas.
Local Transport
Safest option. Most resorts arrange tours and transportation.
Licensed tourist taxis. Agree on price before departure.
Shared taxis along fixed routes. Very cheap but can be uncomfortable. Ask locals for routes.
Possible but driving is on the left side and roads can be challenging.
Driving & Rental Cars
International Driving Permit required
Jamaica requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Min rental age

Detailed road rules aren't available for Jamaica yet — check with your rental agency on arrival.
Renting a car in Jamaica
- Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
- Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
- Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
- Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
- Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
- Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee
EconomyBookings
Compare rental car prices in Jamaica across hundreds of agencies — often cheaper than booking direct.

Safety & Accessibility
For Women Travelers
- Solo female travelers should stick to tourist areas and resort towns
- Avoid walking alone at night, especially outside resort areas
- Use hotel-arranged transport rather than flagging down taxis
- Catcalling is common — a firm but polite response is best
- Tourist areas like Negril, Ocho Rios, and resort zones are generally safe
LGBTQ+ Friendliness
Jamaica has conservative attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals. While violence is rare in tourist areas, same-sex intimacy laws technically remain on the books. LGBTQ+ travelers should exercise discretion, especially outside resort areas.
- Resorts are generally welcoming regardless of orientation
- Avoid public displays of affection outside resort properties
- Some all-inclusive resorts are explicitly LGBTQ+ welcoming
Wheelchair Accessibility
Accessibility infrastructure is limited throughout Jamaica. Most public buildings and tourist attractions are not wheelchair accessible. Some larger resorts have accessible rooms and facilities.
- Major international-brand resorts often have accessible rooms
- Most public transport is not wheelchair accessible
- Beaches can be challenging for mobility aids
- Contact hotels in advance to confirm accessibility
Pickpocket Hotspots
- Craft markets in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios
- Downtown Kingston
- Crowded beach areas
- Bus stops and transportation hubs

Scams to Watch Out For
Beach Vendor Overcharging
Vendors on tourist beaches sell crafts, tours, and substances at heavily inflated prices. Can be very persistent.
Prevention: Politely decline with a firm 'no thank you.' Don't engage if not interested. Buy crafts at established markets.
Taxi Price Gouging
Unlicensed taxis charge tourists 2-3× the normal rate. No meters are used.
Prevention: Use JUTA licensed taxis or arrange transport through your hotel. Always agree on a price before getting in.
Fake Tour Guides
Unofficial guides approach tourists at attractions offering tours at high prices with unreliable service.
Prevention: Book tours through your hotel or established tour companies. Ask for credentials.

Tap Water
Tap water safety depends on where you are.
In some places the tap water is fine to drink, and in others it is not. Ask your hotel or host, and choose sealed bottled water, or water that has been filtered and treated, when you are not sure. If you stick to bottled water, use it to brush your teeth too.
A travel water filter can help, but filters differ. One that removes bacteria and parasites does not remove viruses, so for that you need a purifier, or you can boil the water. Boiling is the best way to make water safe.

Vegetarian options are fairly easy to find thanks to the Ital food tradition. Rice and peas, callaloo, breadfruit, and plantain are common vegetarian staples. Ask for 'no meat' at local restaurants.
🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly
Many traditional dishes are naturally gluten-free — rice and peas, jerk meats, fish, and root vegetables. Fried dumplings and bammy (cassava bread) are also gluten-free. Festival (fried bread) contains wheat.
