Notes for Visitors
- There is no Uber or Lyft in the Bahamas. Licensed taxis with government-set zone fares are the backbone of visitor transport.
- The local ride and delivery apps are split across platforms. Tribur is Android only; Shyft, Aqua Rides, and Bahama Eats are iPhone only. Check what exists for your phone before you rely on any of them.
- Most US carriers include Bahamas roaming, so you can land connected. A local SIM or travel eSIM is only worth it for stays beyond a few days.
- Your hotel front desk is a genuinely reliable way to arrange a vetted taxi or excursion, and often faster than any app.
SIM Cards & Internet
Most major US carriers include the Bahamas in Caribbean roaming, so you can land connected without doing anything. Roaming data is expensive per gigabyte though, so for stays beyond three or four days, or any Out Island travel, a local SIM or travel eSIM is materially cheaper.
- BTC is the legacy national carrier and generally the safer bet for Out Island and Family Island coverage.
- ALIV has strong coverage on New Providence and Grand Bahama and officially supports eSIM with in-store QR activation.
- Travel eSIMs (Airalo, Saily) are data only, so you keep your US number for calls and texts. Install before you fly.
- Prepaid plan prices quoted online are frequently out of date. Confirm in store.
WiFi Reliability
Hotel and resort WiFi is widespread but quality varies. Since 2025, BTC has run ad-sponsored free WiFi on many Nassau buses, taxis, and water taxis, which is useful in transit but not a substitute for mobile data.

Money & Banking
Cards vs Cash
The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and US dollars are accepted interchangeably in Nassau, Paradise Island, and most tourist areas, so you will not lose money on exchange. Cards (Visa, Mastercard) work at hotels, resort restaurants, and tourist-facing businesses. Cash is essential for jitneys, small local restaurants, market vendors, tips, and taxis. On the smaller Out Islands, card infrastructure is thin to nonexistent, so bring enough cash before you leave Nassau.
ATM Tips
Use ATMs inside bank branches (Bank of the Bahamas, RBC, Scotiabank, Commonwealth Bank) rather than standalone machines. ATM skimming is documented in Nassau, so inspect the card slot, shield your PIN, and check statements daily. Decline any 'convert to USD' offer and choose Bahamian dollars. ATM availability drops sharply on the Out Islands.
Tipping Culture
Tipping is customary and a significant part of service worker income. Check the bill first, because 15 percent service is often already included. If it is not, 15 to 20 percent for restaurant service is appropriate. Taxis: about 15 percent. Housekeeping and porters: a few dollars per bag or per day.
- Change is sometimes returned in Bahamian dollars, which spend fine locally but are hard to convert back in the US. Spend them before you fly home.
- Prices are frequently shown with a plain '#x27; symbol. At 1:1 parity it does not matter which currency is meant.
- As of August 2026, cash of USD or BSD 10,000 or more must be declared on arrival. Verify the current threshold before you travel.

Getting Around
From the Airport
The standard transfer. Taxi queue is immediately outside arrivals. Fares are set by government zone regulation, not by meter. Confirm the total for your party and bags before getting in.
Worth it for late arrivals, flight monitoring, or if you need a guaranteed accessible vehicle. Book through your hotel or a vetted operator.
Major properties run guest shuttles. Confirm availability when you book the room.
Taxis and hotel pickups are standard at both. Arrange in advance for evening arrivals, especially on Exuma.
Local Transport
Nassau's minibuses, running roughly 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Exact change required and no change given. Crowded, informal stops, AC not guaranteed. Fine for short daytime hops, not for the airport or after dark.
Zone-based government fares rather than meters. Roughly $3-5 per extra passenger beyond two, plus luggage surcharges. Ask for the rate card if a quote seems off.
About a 10 minute harbour crossing from near Woodes Rogers Wharf. Convenient if you are staying near the waterfront.
Practical on Grand Bahama and for multi-day Out Island stays. Driving is on the LEFT, and most rental cars are US-sourced with the wheel on the left, which takes adjustment at roundabouts.
The normal way to get around on many Out Islands and cays. Arrange in advance; availability thins in the evenings.
Driving & Rental Cars
International Driving Permit not required
Most visitors can drive in Bahamas on their home license alone. If your license isn't in the Latin script, carry a certified translation just in case.
A valid home-country license is accepted for stays up to 90 days; an IDP isn't required but is a cheap way to avoid any doubt at a roadside check. Most rental cars are US-import left-hand-drive despite driving on the left.

Renting a car in Bahamas
- Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
- Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
- Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
- Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
- Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
- Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Safety & Accessibility
For Women Travelers
- Do not walk alone after dark, including in tourist areas.
- Avoid deserted beaches alone at any time of day. Sexual assaults have been documented on and near Nassau beaches.
- Never leave a drink or food unattended. Drink spiking is documented.
- Book your evening transport before you go out rather than looking for a taxi on the street afterwards.
- Choose accommodation with on-site security and good lighting. The US State Department specifically flags vacation rentals without private security as higher risk.
- Share your itinerary and live location with someone at home.
- If you are robbed, do not resist. Keep your hands visible and make the encounter as short as possible.
LGBTQ+ Friendliness
Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 1991 and there are no legal restrictions on organising events, but the age of consent for same-sex relations (18) remains higher than for opposite-sex relations (16). Same-sex marriage and civil unions are not recognised, and there are no comprehensive anti-discrimination protections. Socially, stigma is real and religious institutions are influential. Visitors are not facing systematic persecution, but this is not a destination with legal recognition or reliable social acceptance.
- Be thoughtful about public displays of affection depending on the setting.
- Do not expect legal recognition of a same-sex relationship in a medical or next-of-kin emergency. Carry documentation if that matters to you.
- Be cautious meeting people through dating apps.
- Trans travelers should note that legal gender marker changes are reportedly not available in the Bahamas, so document mismatches may cause friction.

Wheelchair Accessibility
Nassau airport offers wheelchair assistance on request, and major resorts such as Baha Mar list genuinely accessible rooms with roll-in showers and grab bars. Beyond that it gets harder. Nassau sidewalks are uneven and often broken, jitneys are not accessible, and enforcement of accessibility rules is inconsistent. The Out Islands are significantly harder again.
- Book accessible rooms explicitly and get the specific features confirmed in writing. Do not assume a standard room will work.
- Accessible air-conditioned van transfers are available from operators including Majestic Tours and Courteous Transfers, but must be arranged in advance.
- The government wheelchair transportation service listed on bahamas.gov.bs is aimed at residents' medical appointments and is not a visitor transfer service.

- Downtown Nassau Straw Market and surrounding market streets
- Bay Street near cruise ship disembarkation
- Downtown Nassau beaches
- Busy waterfront tourist areas

Scams to Watch Out For
Taxi fare manipulation
The driver quotes a per-person fare instead of the per-vehicle fare, or leaves out the Paradise Island bridge toll and luggage surcharges until you arrive.
Prevention: Ask the exact question before getting in: 'What is the total fare for X people with X bags to [destination]?' Government rates are published and you can ask to see the rate card.
ATM skimming
Card-reading devices fitted to ATMs in Nassau capture your card details and PIN.
Prevention: Use ATMs inside bank branches rather than standalone machines, check the card slot for anything loose or added on, cover the keypad, and review your statements daily while travelling.
Jet ski and watercraft bait-and-switch
An operator quotes a low price, then demands more money mid-rental or accuses you of damage you did not cause.
Prevention: Only use operators vetted by your hotel or resort. Avoid independent beach operators entirely. The US State Department has also documented sexual assaults by jet ski operators.
Unsolicited excursion sellers
Someone approaches you on the beach or near the cruise port with an unusually good deal on snorkelling or an island tour, takes a deposit or full payment, and then does not deliver.
Prevention: Book through your hotel, cruise line, or a recognised operator. Never hand cash to a stranger up front.
Free vacation timeshare promotions
A mall or online promotion offers a free Bahamas trip in exchange for attending a vacation club presentation. Legal, but typically a high pressure multi-hour sales session with hidden fees and contracts that are hard to exit.
Prevention: Treat any 'free' trip contingent on attending a presentation as a sales event, and do not sign anything on the day.

Tap Water
Tap water safety depends on where you are.
In some places the tap water is fine to drink, and in others it is not. Ask your hotel or host, and choose sealed bottled water, or water that has been filtered and treated, when you are not sure. If you stick to bottled water, use it to brush your teeth too.
In Bahamas
Treated municipal water in Nassau and Paradise Island resorts is generally considered safe, but use bottled or filtered water on the Out Islands, at properties on private cisterns or wells, and anywhere water quality is uncertain.
A travel water filter can help, but filters differ. One that removes bacteria and parasites does not remove viruses, so for that you need a purifier, or you can boil the water. Boiling is the best way to make water safe.

Dietary Options
🌱 Vegan Friendly
Workable in Nassau with planning, thin everywhere else. The default Bahamian diet is seafood and meat heavy, but Nassau has a small plant-based scene including Eat Right Delights, Better Living Health Center & Deli, and a vegan daily plate at Rasta. Larger resort restaurants label vegan items. On the Out Islands, tell your accommodation what you need well in advance.
🥗 Vegetarian Friendly
Easier than vegan but still needs attention. Fish is often not treated as 'meat' locally, so ask explicitly whether a dish contains fish or seafood. Resort restaurants reliably label vegetarian options.
🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly
Higher-end resort restaurants label gluten-free items, but standard Bahamian cooking (conch fritters, cracked conch, johnnycake) is wheat based. Treat 'gluten friendly' as different from gluten free: kitchens are not dedicated and shared fryers are common. If you have celiac disease, ask specifically about wheat in sauces and marinades, shared fryers, and separate prep surfaces.

Cultural Tips
Greet before you ask. Say 'Good morning', 'Good afternoon', or 'Good evening' before making any request of anyone. Launching straight into a question reads as rude, and this one habit will improve every interaction you have.
Cover up off the beach. Swimwear is for the sand. In shops, restaurants, taxis, and on the street, put on a cover-up or shorts.
Use Mr., Mrs., or Miss with a last name until you are invited to use a first name. A handshake on introduction is normal.
The Bahamas is strongly Christian. In churches, cover shoulders and knees, remove hats, silence your phone, and ask before photographing.
Bahamian pace is real. Build buffers into your schedule. Getting visibly frustrated will not speed anything up and will cost you goodwill.
Check the bill before tipping. A 15 percent service charge is often already added.
Local Quirks & Fun Facts
Junkanoo is the defining national festival, a full street parade of handmade costumes and drums on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. If your trip overlaps, go.
Conch is pronounced 'konk'. Never 'contch'. The conch salad made fresh at Arawak Cay is an institution.
A 'potcake' is a Bahamian street dog and something close to a national mascot. The name comes from the crust at the bottom of the cooking pot.
Rake-and-scrape music uses a saw played with a screwdriver as percussion. It sounds exactly as good as that implies.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Assuming taxis are metered. They are not. Fares are set by government zone, and you should confirm the total for your party and bags before getting in.
Wearing swimwear into shops, restaurants, and taxis.
Skipping the greeting before making a request.
Booking excursions from aggressive beach vendors instead of through your hotel or a vetted operator.
Using independent jet ski operators on New Providence and Paradise Island. The US State Department warns specifically about this, and US government employees are prohibited from using them.
Forgetting a stray round of ammunition in checked luggage. Bahamian firearms and ammunition law is strict and this has resulted in arrest, jail time, and heavy fines for US travelers. Search your bags before you fly.
Assuming every beach is public. Some resort beaches are private, and public access points are not always obvious.
Overestimating your swimming ability in open water with tidal currents.
