Essential Apps

Uber logoUber

Well established and reliable in Prague. Prefer it over hailing a taxi off the street.

Bolt logoBolt

Widely used alongside Uber, often with shorter wait times.

Notes for Visitors

  • PID Lítačka app works for buying Prague transit tickets with an international card
  • Use Bolt/Uber or a licensed AAA Radiotaxi — unlicensed taxis at the airport/train station overcharge tourists
  • Carry some cash for small vendors and traditional pubs

SIM Cards & Internet

Get an eSIM or local SIM. T-Mobile CZ has the best coverage; O2 and Vodafone are solid alternatives.

T-Mobile CZ
O2
Vodafone
  • eSIM works with Airalo, Saily
  • Coverage is excellent in cities, good in most rural areas
  • Most cafes and hotels offer free WiFi

WiFi Reliability

Good WiFi in cafes, hotels, and public spaces in Prague and other cities.

Money & Banking

Cards vs Cash

Prague and other cities are increasingly card-friendly — contactless Visa/Mastercard is widely accepted. Cash is still useful for small vendors, some traditional pubs, and tips.

ATM Tips

Use ATMs at major banks (Česká spořitelna, ČSOB, Komerční banka). Avoid Euronet ATMs in tourist areas — they offer poor exchange rates and push a bad 'dynamic currency conversion' option; always choose to be charged in CZK, not your home currency.

Tipping Culture

Round up or add around 10% at restaurants for good service. Leaving no tip at all is noticed, unlike in some other European countries.

  • Czech Republic uses CZK (koruna), NOT the euro — some tourist-area businesses accept EUR but at poor rates
  • Avoid Wenceslas Square currency exchange booths advertising '0% commission' — use a bank ATM instead

Driving & Rental Cars

International Driving Permit required

Czech Republic requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or rent a car legally. Rental agencies often won't ask — but if you're pulled over, local police may require it and fines can be significant. Also required if your license isn't in the local language or script. Costs around $20, takes about a week, and you can't get one once you've left.

Motorways require a prepaid vignette — driving without one is caught by cameras and results in an automatic fine.

Renting a car in Czech Republic

  • Book early for busy seasons, and book an automatic ahead of time if you need one (manual is the default in many countries)
  • Choose a "full to full" fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you use
  • Use a credit card in the driver's name, since the desk will hold a deposit on it
  • Photograph or film the car at pickup, including every existing scratch
  • Ask about tolls, cross-border fees and extra drivers before you sign
  • Minimum rental age here is 21, and drivers under 25 often pay a young-driver fee

Safety & Accessibility

For Women Travelers

Generally Safe
  • Czech Republic is generally safe for solo female travelers
  • Public transport is reliable and safe at night
  • Standard city-center caution applies late at night around nightlife areas

LGBTQ+ Friendliness

Friendly

Registered partnerships have been legal since 2006; full marriage equality has been a more recent and ongoing political topic. Prague has a visible LGBTQ+ scene; attitudes are more conservative outside major cities.

  • Prague Pride is a major annual event
  • Be more discreet in smaller towns and rural areas

Wheelchair Accessibility

Moderate

Prague's newer metro stations and trams are increasingly accessible, but cobblestones in the historic center are a real obstacle for wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Prague metro has accessible stations
  • Major museums are improving accessibility

Pickpocket Hotspots

  • Charles Bridge
  • Old Town Square
  • Tram lines 22 and 23 (a well-known tourist tram pickpocket route)

Scams to Watch Out For

Currency exchange rip-offs

Booths near Wenceslas Square and the Old Town advertise '0% commission' but build a terrible rate into the exchange itself.

Prevention: Use a bank-branded ATM (Česká spořitelna, ČSOB, Komerční banka) instead.

Unlicensed taxi overcharging

Taxis waiting outside the airport or main train station sometimes quote inflated flat fares to tourists.

Prevention: Use Uber, Bolt, or call AAA Radiotaxi directly.

Restaurant bill padding

Some restaurants in the historic center add unordered items (bread, dips) to the bill without asking.

Prevention: Check the bill carefully and query anything you didn't order.

Dietary Options

🌱 Vegan Friendly

Moderate

Prague has a growing vegan scene, especially in Vinohrady and Žižkov. Traditional Czech cuisine is very meat- and dairy-heavy (pork, dumplings, cream sauces), so options thin out fast outside Prague.

🥗 Vegetarian Friendly

Good

Most Prague restaurants have vegetarian options; look for 'bezmasé' (meatless) on menus. Outside Prague, options are more limited.

🌾 Gluten-Free Friendly

Moderate

Awareness is growing in Prague, with some dedicated gluten-free cafes. Traditional dumplings (knedlíky) are wheat-based, so ask carefully.

Traveling with a Pet

Moderate
7/10

Governed by the uniform 2026 EU pet entry health protocols (Regulation 2026/131).

Timeline

21 days minimum

Quarantine Risk

None if compliant

Regulatory Framework

EU Regulation 2026/131 framework.

Key Constraints

Strict microchip-before-rabies vaccine sequence. 10-day window for official vet portal validation. Tapeworm rules add-on applies if entering Norway/Finland.

Pet Culture

Extremely pet-friendly. Highly normalized across regional rails, sidewalk dining, and city park trails.

Cultural Tips

Czechs tend to be direct and reserved with strangers rather than overtly friendly — this is a communication style, not rudeness

Remove shoes when entering someone's home

Beer is a genuine part of daily culture — the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world

Say 'Na zdraví' (cheers) when toasting, and make eye contact while doing so

Punctuality is expected for business and social meetings

Local Quirks & Fun Facts

😄

Pilsner-style lager originated in the Czech city of Plzeň in 1842 — most of the world's lagers descend from it

😄

Prague's Astronomical Clock, still working, dates to 1410

😄

Czech puppet theater is a UNESCO-recognized tradition

😄

'Czech Republic' (or 'Czechia') has only been the country's name since the 1993 split from Slovakia — older guidebooks may still say 'Czechoslovakia'

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming the euro is accepted — it's not the official currency, and tourist-area businesses that do take it give poor rates

Exchanging money at 'commission-free' booths on Wenceslas Square instead of using a bank ATM

Getting into an unmarked taxi at the airport or train station instead of using Uber/Bolt/AAA Radiotaxi

Not validating a public transport ticket before boarding — inspectors do check and fines are significant

Only seeing Prague's historic center and missing day trips like Kutná Hora or Český Krumlov
